1. Types of water intake screens
There are 3 types of water intake screens: drum screens, T intake screens, and Half-barrel screens.

Drum Screen T Intake Screen Half Barrel Screen
The drum intake screen is ideal for low volume, low flow applications and is best suited for lake and reservoir intake applications. The screen can be mounted vertically or horizontally. It is the most economical way to intake water. The Tee intake screen is designed with a tapered end to deflect debris. It is ideal for cooling plants, pulp and paper mills, and other industrial facilities that need to extract large volumes of water from lakes, rivers, or the ocean. The half-barrel screen is designed for stream and river bottom applications where a T-type intake will not work properly.

2. Water Depth 
The water depth at the location where the intake screen is required is an important factor in determining the size of the intake screen. The available water depth should be at least twice the diameter of the intake screen. Half barrel screens require a 6-inch immersion depth.
When designing the intake screen, the maximum immersion depth be considered to accommodate the water pressure at the installation site. If the water depth at the intake screen location varies, multi-stage intake screens are ideal for flexibility.

 

3. Material selection
We can apply different materials according to other water quality conditions. For example, stainless steel 304 is the best and most economical material to use in freshwater without biological pollution issues conditions; while brackish water requires stainless steel 316 to provide corrosion resistance.

 

4. Wedge wire size and screen size
▪ Wedge wire size (wire width)
Typically, for slots smaller than 1/4 inch, use .069 inch wide wire. For larger slots, use a 125-inch wide wire.
▪ Screen size (diameter)
The selection of inlet screen size is based on capacity calculations, which are dependent on applicable government regulations regarding flow rate and slot opening.

5. Water intake screen capacity
The design of the water intake screen must meet the minimum capacity of the current water demand. It is also necessary to consider whether additional capacity expansion is needed in the future.

 

6. Flow Rate and Hydraulics
▪ Flow Rate: The intake screen must be designed to accommodate the required flow while minimizing head loss.
▪ Hydraulic Design: The hydraulic design of the screen involves considering factors such as approach velocity, screen submergence, and flow distribution.
